Every fashion magazine seems to spin tales of the virtues of the Little Black Dress (LBD). It’s classic style, its versatility from day to evening, and let’s not forget that if you’ve gained 10 pounds, no problem; the LBD will make you look 10 pounds slimmer.
The only thing missing is the Little Black Dress’ ability to wash my dishes and take out the garbage. We have put this item of clothing on a pedestal and given it god-like status.
No matter what the problem may be, the Little Black Dress has the power of solving it all. .
The little black dress that Audrey Hepburn made famous has now become the piece of clothing you reach for when you have nothing to wear. Instead of its glamour status, it’s now on the same level as the worn in comfy pair of slippers that you slip into on a chilly winter night.
How did this happen to such an iconic piece of clothing?
Simply put, overuse, overplayed and overrated! The Little Black dress has become boring.
Properly worn, the little black dress is the epitome of style and classic sophistication. It can also be a fashion forward piece that is fun. It’s all how you put it together.
Do’s
Do wear brightly colored shoes to add some depth to the look. Nothing says glamour more than a LBD paired with patent red heels. Save the black pumps for anything but the LBD. The only exceptions to this, are if the said black heels are funky, studded or have any kind of rhinestone to it. Just because your wearing black does not mean you have to blend in with the crowd. Have fun with your footwear.
Do accessorize. Classic gold or silver jewellery give the LBD a polished sophisticated look, while colourful jewellery makes the LBD look fashion forward.
Do wear dramatic makeup. Smokey eyes add a sultry look, whereas a bright red pout is guaranteed to get you some positive attention.
Do wear blush. Black, contrary to popular belief does not suit everyone. It tends to make you look washed out, if you don’t add some color to your face. Blush will give your cheeks that rosy glow and make you come alive.
Do wear bronzer or a tinted moisturizer especially if you’re pale-faced like me. A little bronzer goes a long way. The key is to make your skin look healthy and alive so that the LBD is not overpowering.
Don’ts
Don’t wear head to toe black. Nothing says I’m spending the evening at the morgue like an entire outfit in this midnight shade.
Don’t overdue the accessories. If you choose a chunky bracelet, tone down the neckwear and simplify the earrings.
Don’t overdue the makeup. If you do a smokey eye, tone down the lips. If you go for a dramatic mouth tone down the eyes. You want people to notice you, not your makeup!
Yes, the Little Black Dress is a staple of many women’s wardrobe. And yes its versatility can not be denied. However; when you chose to wear the LBD, wear it with style, add your own personal flavor and take that LBD and make it your own.
