Dry hair is often caused by abusing the hair. Women are guilty of abusing the hair in various ways. They chemically treat hair, straighten hair, curl hair, process hair, color hair, apply the wrong types of products to the hair, or use the wrong style brush or comb. And certainly many women use harsh hair dryers, curling irons, straightening irons daily. This constant hair abuse leads to dry and brittle hair that is hard to control or maintain. And of course too much exposure to the sun leads to more problems for those already suffering with the dry hair condition.

Shampooing Dry Hair

The main culprits behind dry hair is often the shampoo that is used. Plus, how the hair is handled during the shampoo process. Did you know that frequent shampooing is also detrimental to the hair? Well, it's true! Here is how to handle the hair while shampooing. Always handle the hair gently during the shampooing process. Use the fingertips to gently rub in the shampoo. And make sure to buy the correct formula for dry hair. One that adds moisture and shine to the hair. Remember to shampoo the hair less often to reduce drying out the hair.

Conditioning Dry Hair

Look for moisturizing formula conditioner with less alcohol. Alcohol has a tendency to make the hair even drier.

Hot Oil Treatments

Hot oil treatments are used by many with fly away dry hair. These over the counter treatments are moderately priced and do an excellent job of conditioning the dry hair. Professionally applied hot oil treatments are the best but expensive. It's easy to apply a hot oil treatment at home and save money. Purchase the product and rub into the hair. Place a plastic cap over the hair. And let the hot oil treatment penetrate into the hair for about 15 minutes or per package directions.

Scalp Massage

Massaging the scalp stimulates the oil glands that curb the dry hair condition. Make massaging the scalp a regular routine in your dry hair care regimen. Use the fingertips to properly massage the scalp. Massage the entire scalp using gentle circular motions.

Hair Treatments

Many hair treatments used only add to the dry conditions. Use the curling and straightening irons less. Reduce perms and hair relaxers. Color the hair less often. And after washing and conditioning the hair refrain from using a blow dryer on high setting. Set the hair dryer on warm or let the hair dry naturally. It takes longer for the hair to dry but it is less damaging to the hair.

Use these tips to turn dry fly away hair into great hair!

What I do is, I use hair treatment at least once a week to maintain softness. I don't shampoo everyday.

As mentioned in this thread, you can do hotoil treatments and hair treatments to retain moisture in your hair. Also, you may alternate using shampoo everyday as most shampoos available in the market contain harsh chemicals that make our hair dry. You may use conditioner everyday to keep it soft and smooth.

I actually use 3 different types of shampoo but the same brand. I use little amount of shampoo, then conditioner, and then I use a hair serum on a damp hair. It makes my hair very soft and silky. But I don't shower in the morning anymore before going to work. In fact I shower at night before I sleep. I compared the result (showing before I leave vs. showing before I sleep) and the result is better when I wash my hair at night. The reason is that the hair produces natural oil after washing and that adds softness to it. I also make sure that I do hot oil treatment at home every week. I have a natural wavy hair and I used to go so the salon to have it treated to be straighter, but following my hair care routine actually improved my hair and I like it better now :)

Dryness is really hard to solve! I have tried so maaaanyyyy products before, like countless, just to get my hair all soft! Such a real waste of money and time! Maybe I'll follow you guys and not shampoo everyday.. I am also looking for a good conditioner and may be considering Living Proof, do you know anything about it??

Nope. I haven't heard of that yet. What is it? Although I must say that using an organic hair conditioning product will really help a lot. I have a baby thin hair so it gets dry a lot because of daily shampooing, so I wash my hair at night so it's wearable and manageable in the morning because it produces natural oil over night :)

Actually hairstylists advice not to shampoo everyday. If ever you are the kind of person that must wash her/his hair. Always remember to use enough for lather and mix it with water before applying to the hair. Shampoo uses strong ingredients that can damage our natural oil If we use too much. That is what my hair stylist always tell me. That's why i shampoo my hair every other day to prevent dryness and falling hair.

As the other's said too, shampoo everyday is not good for hairs, try to shampoo 5 days a week then less less and less till 2 times a week I think is good.. :)

I am used to shampooing everyday and I don't think I can ever get used to shampoo twice a week :). Maybe we can try dry shampoo... Has anyone tried using a dry shampoo?
