As ageing occurs, a person's skin cells divide more slowly, and the inner skin, or dermis, starts to thin. Wrinkles develop as we get older because natural substances such as collagen (the major structural protein in the skin), elastin (the protein that causes tissue to stretch) and hyaluronic acid (which gives skin volume), which provide the skin with structure and volume decrease with age. The skin's ability to retain moisture diminishes; the sweat and oil-secreting glands degenerate, depriving the skin of their protective water-lipid emulsions. As a consequence, the skin becomes dry and scaly. Skin loses its elasticity; when pressed, it no longer springs back to its initial position but instead sags and forms furrows or wrinkles. In addition, the ability of the skin to repair itself diminishes with ageing, so wounds are slower to heal. Frown lines (lines between the eyebrows) and crow's feet (lines that radiate from the corners of the eyes) appear because of persistent small muscle contractions. Habitual facial expressions also form characteristic lines and contribute to the formation of jowls and drooping eyelids. Anti-ageing skin care, as recommended by Australian cosmetic clinics, is designed to combat some of these skin ageing processes, and to reduce wrinkles.
The skin can also age prematurely as a result of prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun (called extrinsic ageing or photoageing). Sun damage is one of the most important causes of skin ageing and skin disorders such as skin cancers. Overall, exposure to ultraviolet (referred to as UVA or UVB) radiation from sunlight accounts for about 90% of the symptoms of premature skin ageing, and most of these effects occur by age 20. Both UVA and UVB rays cause damage leading to wrinkles, lower immunity against infection, ageing skin disorders, and skin cancer. Even small amounts of UV radiation damage collagen fibres and cause accumulation of abnormal elastin. During sun damage, large amounts of enzymes are produced. These enzymes remodel the sun-injured tissue by synthesising and reforming collagen. As part of the process, however, some of the enzymes actually degrade collagen. The result is an uneven formation (matrix) of disorganised collagen fibres called solar scars, which eventually result in wrinkles. Effectively protecting the skin from sun damage is one of the most important ways to reduce wrinkles and prevent skin cancer.

Well! I simply thinks that old age can cause wrinkles more than any other effect.

Thanks for giving your opinion mshah. It's a given fact that old age causes wrinkles but aside from the most obvious reasons, there are others like too much exposure to the sun and stress.

The few factor i know that can cause major wrinkles is dipression and stress. Also not wearing sunblock is another one. Lastly not using moisturizer can also fasten the aging process. Oil in our skin keeps us young but of course too much of it can cause acne as well. It just helps keeping our skin from drying and becomes a natural moisturizer.

I totally agree with you on that :)

Yup stress and unhealthy lifestyle can also add to it.

Yeah definitely! If you have enough water in your body, exercise, have enough sleep, and you eat healthy, you will slow down the skin aging process.

Wrinkles are a by-product of the aging process. With age, skin cells divide more slowly, and the inner layer, called the dermis, begins to thin. The network of elastin and collagen fibers, which support the outer layer, loosen and unravel, causing depressions on the surface.

Great article about wrinkles. It is true, there are many factors that could cause our skin to age and have wrinkles. I would say that it's better to take care or our skin while you're still young to prevent premature ageing and wrinkles.

That is right. And this can be done by good diet and eating lifestyle, regular exercise, drinking plenty of water, and a good facial care routine. Of course we should not forget about using a good sun protection lotion to protect our skin from UVA and UVB rays that is most of the time the cause of premature aging of our skin.

I agree with your post that stress is the reason why people got wrinkles on their face. Even if you stay away from stress, you cannot do that because stress is a part of our daily life. But there are some medicines against wrinkles; prescription of the doctor is needed. Great post!! Thanks for the information and tips... ;)

There really are many factors that affect the growth of wrinkles like aging, stress, unhealthy diet, sun exposure and dry skin. Junk foods and monosodium glutamate I believe is a factor that dries up the skin and making it secrete more oil causing the skin to wrinkle.

What are the main factors that cause wrinkles?
Apart from the normal aging process, the following factors are known to promote the development of wrinkles:
* Smoking - experts say that the link between regular smoking and the accelerated aging of skin is due to a reduced blood supply to the skin.
* Light skin - people with light skin tend to experience a higher level of sun damage, which usually accelerates the development of wrinkles.
* Genetic factors - if your parents developed wrinkles earlier than other people, your chances of also doing so are significantly higher than somebody whose parents developed wrinkles later than others.
* Hair - some hairstyles provide more shade for the face than others.
* Clothes - people who tend to wear hats and long sleeves usually develop wrinkles later in life compared to other people of the same skin type.
* Some jobs - people whose jobs expose them to more sunlight tend to become wrinkly earlier than others. Examples include fishermen, farmers, sailors, golfers, tanning booth employees (UV exposure), and gardeners.
* Exposure to UV (ultraviolet light) - apart from those mentioned above who have jobs that expose them to more sunlight, people who spend considerable time out in the sun during their leisure hours are more likely to develop wrinkles earlier.
* Facial expressions - people who repeatedly smile, frown, or squint will develop fine lines and wrinkles earlier than other who do not do these facial expressions so often. According to the Mayo Clinic, each time we use a facial muscle a groove forms under the surface of the skin. When you are young the skin springs back, but as it gets older and loses its flexibility springing back becomes harder and less frequent, resulting in more permanent grooves.
